Can a Chevrolet Colorado Tow a Camper?
Before towing any type of cargo behind a Chevy Truck, it is important that you make sure you check the vehicle’s manual to see what weight it is able to tow. With that being said, the Chevy Colorado has several different trim levels that can each pull a different amount of weight.
Chevy Colorado Trim Levels
Each of the Chevy Colorado trim levels has different torque and horsepower according to the size of its engine. Remember to always make sure that you check the towing weight of your vehicle before attempting to pull any weight behind your Chevy Colorado. The three different trim levels of the Colorado pull different amounts of weight according to its torque and horsepower.
Standard 2.5-liter 4-cylinder - With a 200 horsepower engine, the standard Chevy Colorado can pull up to 3,500 pounds.
3.6-liter DOHC V6 - This next Colorado trim level has 308 horsepower with the ability to tow up to 7,000 pounds, doubling that of the standard trim.
Duramax 2.8-liter Turbo-Diesel - As the most powerful trim level in its class the 369 lb/ft torque power of this engine can tow up to 7,700 pounds.
How much do different size Campers weigh?
There are various types of campers that you can buy in many different sizes. Here are some common camper models that get larger as the list goes on. Just remember to check both the weight of the camper and the towing capacity of your Chevy Colorado before attempting to tow a trailer.
Teardrop Camper - Teardrop campers are one of the smallest types of campers available as they have enough sleeping space for two adults and a basic kitchen on their backside. These campers are the easiest to tow as they only weigh between 500-2,000 pounds. There should be no issue with pulling one of these campers behind any Colorado trim level.
Popup Camper - This type of trailer can be towed by most Chevy Colorado trim levels as they weigh from 1,000 to 4,000 pounds. If you are using standard Colorado to transport a popup camper it is important to make sure that you do not come too close to the 3,500 lb towing limit of the vehicle. It is good practice to stay within 15% under the towing capacity of the truck. For example, you probably should not tow a 3,400 lb trailer if the limit is 3,500.
Airstream Camper - The same goes with the airstream camper as they do with the popup campers. These trailers range between 2,000 and 4,000 pounds. Just make sure that you are not hauling too much weight in your camper if you are approaching the towing limit on your vehicle.
Classic Travel Camper - This type of camper can vary between a wide weight range of 2,000 to 8,000 pounds. You will have to check the weight of your camper before you connect it to the back of your trailer.
