In February 2019, Chevrolet came out with the invisible trailer for the 2020 Chevy Silverado. The multiple cameras that are placed around the truck provide the driver with different angles that can be seen through the dashboard display. All of these angles provide the unique ability to see 360 degrees around your truck. This feature is pretty exciting by itself, but Chevy found a way to one-up themselves. With the invisible trailer camera, the truck display will show a feed of the space behind the trailer. This gives the illusion that the trailer is completely invisible.
So how does it actually work? All the footage coming from the cameras is stitched together in a way that looks natural. For the invisible trailer trick, there needs to be a camera placed onto the back of the trailer. This feature is an option that you can install yourself, or have a dealer do it for you. Once the camera is installed onto the trailer, the feed can be processed and matched with the tailgate camera feed. Combining the two gives an image that makes the trailer appear invisible.
How Does Chevy do the Bird’s Eye View?
The bird’s eye view is similar to the invisible trailer in how it is fabricated. For the third-person views of the truck, the display is just putting together all camera feeds and overlaying a 3D image of the truck. The bird’s eye view can be a useful tool for when you need assistance with moving your truck out of a tight spot with nobody else there to guide you.
