Ever wonder why pickup trucks have numbers after their names? For example, the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 has 1500 in its name. What does that mean?
When automotive companies started to produce pickup trucks, they were named by what their payload capacity was. The total weight of the cargo and passengers in the cabin and the bed of the truck was what calculates the payload capacity. When pickup trucks first started coming out, there was around three payload capacities offered: 1,000 pounds, 1,500 pounds and 2,000 pounds.
As automotive companies started to produce stronger and more powerful pickup trucks the original payload capacities increased. The 1,000-pound payload capacity quickly became a thing of the past because the weight of two large adults would basically equal to half the payload amount.
Why didn’t the automakers change the numbers on the name of their pickups? Automakers decided that it would be way less confusing to keep the numbers. To have a Silverado 1500 and then have a Silverado 1745, they thought it would be confusing for the customer. It could get too complex to have so many different Silverado models with different numbers.
The numbers have a different meaning
The numbers now represent something else to help consumers understand the type of truck better. The numbers tell the consumer if the truck is considered a light duty or heavy duty truck. There is a Silverado 1500, Silverado 2500 and Silverado 3500. The higher the number, the more heavy duty they are considered and the more capable they are for towing and payload.
