Remote start allows drivers to start their car using either a button on their key fob or, more recently, their smartphone. This feature is incredibly convenient in times where the weather outside is less than ideal - for example, in the frigid winter temperatures or the extreme summer heat.
Before remote starters were automatically installed in cars, drivers commonly purchased their own remote starter devices to install into the vehicles. However, they did not always work so well, so they lacked popularity. These starters also could only start the engine and had no other capabilities.
Remote starters today have the ability to not only turn on the vehicle, but sometimes they are able to control the temperature inside the car to warm it up or cool it down depending on the conditions outside, creating a comfortable environment for the driver when they get in.
The Chevrolet Malibu, a mid-size family car, has offered remote start as an option on select trims for many years - but which ones offer it and for which years?
2022 Chevy Malibu
The 2022 Chevy Malibu is Chevrolet’s last available sedan in its lineup. This year, it continues to sport a spacious interior with an accessible touchscreen. The design remains largely the same that it has for the past seven years. Chevy also discontinued the L trim of the vehicle, making the LS trim the base trim.
For Chevy’s newest Malibu, all four trims offer remote start, with the LS and RS offering it as an option - for LT and Premier, remote start comes as standard.
2021 Chevy Malibu
In 2021, the Chevy Malibu came with a few small changes despite the lack of design differences. First, Chevy integrated standardized wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto into the Malibu, as well as a buckle to drive safety feature.
Similar to the 2022 model, four trims offer remote start, with the LS and RS offering it as an option - for LT and Premier, remote start comes as standard. The thing to keep in mind with the 2021 Malibu is that there are five trims, and remote start does not come as an option for the L trim.
2020 Chevy Malibu
2020 Chevy Malibu
The 2020 Chevy Malibu offered nearly no new features after the 2019 model. It was released with a relatively cheap base price, which attracts customers looking to keep to a budget, and also advertises great fuel economy.
The 2020 Chevy Malibu has five trim levels, the top four of them offering a remote start feature. The LS and RS trims only provide remote start as an option, while the LT and Premiere trims have remote start available as standard.
2019 Chevy Malibu
In 2019, the Chevy Malibu had a few upgrades. They integrated a new 8-inch infotainment center into the vehicle, introduced the RS trim, and slightly refurbished the exterior of the car - mainly the grille, headlights, and taillights. The Malibu ranked #8 in 2019’s affordable midsize cars as well, scoring a 7.8 out of 10.
Including the integration of the RS trim, the 2019 Malibu offered remote start for four of the five trim levels - LS (optional), RS (optional), LT, and Premier. The only trim to exclude remote start was the L trim.
2018 Chevy Malibu
The 2018 Chevy Malibu offered little changes after 2017 in terms of design and functionality - the main boasts about the car include the safety features (such as Teen Driver and Rear Seat Reminder), the gas mileage, and the comfort level.
For this year, remote start is optional for the LS and LT trims, and only standard for Premier.
2017 Chevy Malibu
2017 Chevy Malibu
The 2017 Chevy Malibu ranked #4 among its competitors in 2017’s Affordable Midsize Cars, also winning the award for Best Midsize Car for Families. It came with wonderful safety features and an easy to use infotainment system, all while remaining at an extremely affordable price. Apple Carplay and Android Auto also came to the LS and LT models.
Remote start was optional for both the LS and LT trims, but standard for the luxurious Premier trim.
2016 Chevy Malibu
2016 is the last time the Chevy Malibu saw a complete redesign - effectively everything about the car changed compared to the 2015 design except for its name. The redesign sports the modern look that we know the Malibu to have today.
Remote start comes as an option on the LS and LT trims, and standard on the LTZ, 2LT, and Premier trims.
2015 Chevy Malibu
In 2015, the Chevy Malibu integrated 4G LTE technology with OnStar, making it a Wi-Fi hotspot. Additionally, they included rear parking sensors to the vehicle as well. The safety features keep the Malibu a top notch sedan and a worthy competitor all these years later.
Remote start comes as an option for the LS and 1LT trims, while the 2LT, 3LT, and LTZ trims have a standard remote start in 2015.
