Chevy SSR

Ahh, the iconic Chevy SSR. You can’t miss its head-turning silhouette and unmistakable Chevrolet performance. Here at Powers Swain, we have yet to see something as unique as the SSR, and our team hangs onto a small hope that it will return to the roadways someday.

When was the SSR Made?

The Chevrolet SSR (which stands for Super Sport Roadster) was in production from 2003 to 2006 and made a splash everywhere it went.

What inspired the SSR Design?

The 2-door roadster pickup is unlike anything we’ve ever seen, and its retro-inspired design was born from the pickup truck design Chevy made in the late 1940s and early ‘50s. Add in some muscle elements and the excitement of a roadster and you have a vehicle previously only seen in gearheads’ dreams.

Bulging fenders, five-spoke sport wheels, and a retractable hardtop make the Chevrolet SSR a vehicle you’ll remember for the rest of your life. Chevy engineers had to bring a special process called Inverted Toggle Draw back to life to create those massive fenders, which was a huge feat for the production plant to achieve.

What Engine Powers the SSR?

Originally, the only available powertrain was the 5.3-liter V8 that made 300 horsepower and was paired to a four-speed automatic. In its last year, the SSR gained additional power from a revamped engine that drivers could pair to a four-speed automatic for 400 horsepower or six-speed manual which dropped horsepower to 395 ponies.

Where can I buy a Chevy SSR?

They are tough to find! Only 24,112 were sold to the public over the course of four years, and only 2,213 of those were sold with a 6-speed manual. If you see a Ricochet Silver or Aqua Blue SSR, you’d better find the owner and ask for a photo – only a handful were ever made in the factory.

When is the new Chevy SSR coming out?

Only time will tell. If Chevy does decide to revive this fun combination of roadster and pickup, we bet they’ll include a more powerful engine and give drivers more creature comforts since those were the two largest complaints throughout the SSR’s production.

Can I Buy a Chevy SSR in NC?

We occasionally see SSR models become available for sale, but since they are limited in availability and cause such a stir on the roads, owners are often reluctant to let them go. If you’re searching for an SSR, call our team at (910) 728-4618 or contact us online or here below – we’ll be happy to aid you in your search for a unique piece of Chevrolet history.
