Wheel Alignment in Fayetteville, NC

If your Chevy drifts when you let go of the wheel, the steering wheel sits crooked on a straight road, or one edge of a tire is wearing faster than the rest, an alignment check is the cheapest thing you can do before it becomes a set of tires.

How to tell

Five Signs Your Alignment Is Out

Any one of these is worth a check. Two or more usually means it has been out for a while.

You can feel it

  • The car pulls to one side when you relax your grip on a flat, straight road.
  • The steering wheel is crooked when you are driving straight — the badge sits off-center.
  • Vibration through the wheel that was not there before.

You can see it

  • Uneven tire wear — one shoulder of the tread worn noticeably more than the other, or feathering you can feel by running a hand across the tread.
  • The wheel does not return to center on its own after a turn.

Uneven wear is the expensive one. By the time it is obvious, the tire usually cannot be saved.

Why it happens here

Fayetteville Roads Are Hard on Alignment

Alignment rarely goes out all at once. It goes out gradually, from the ordinary business of driving around Cumberland County.

Potholes and patched surfaces

A pothole taken at speed on Bragg Boulevard or Raeford Road does not have to damage anything visibly to knock the geometry out. Winter freeze-and-thaw opens them up faster than they get patched.

Curbs, and the I-95 run

Clipping a curb while parking is one of the most common causes we see. So is sustained highway mileage — if you commute up I-95 or out the All American Freeway every day, small misalignments get a lot of chances to wear a tire.

New tires or suspension work

Worth checking alignment any time the suspension has been apart, and whenever you fit a new set of tires. Putting new tires on a misaligned vehicle is how a good set gets ruined early.

What we do

What an Alignment at Powers Swain Involves

Our GM-certified technicians measure and adjust the three angles that decide how your wheels meet the road, to the spec Chevrolet set for your specific model — not a generic setting.

Toe

Whether the wheels point slightly in or out when viewed from above. The angle most often responsible for rapid, even-looking wear across a tire.

Camber

The inward or outward tilt of the wheel seen from the front. Out of spec, it wears one shoulder of the tire and leaves the other almost new.

Caster

The steering-axis angle that governs straight-line stability and how the wheel self-centers after a turn. Usually what you are feeling when a car wanders.

We will tell you what the measurements were before and after. If the readings point at a worn suspension or steering component rather than alignment alone, we will say so — an alignment cannot hold on a worn part.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I get a wheel alignment?

Most drivers benefit from having it checked about once a year, and any time you fit new tires, have suspension work done, or hit a significant pothole or curb. If you are seeing uneven tire wear or the car is pulling, have it checked straight away rather than waiting for the annual mark.

How long does an alignment take?

A straightforward alignment is usually done within the same visit. If the measurements reveal a worn suspension or steering component, we will talk to you before doing any additional work.

Do I need an alignment when I buy new tires?

It is strongly recommended. New tires fitted to a vehicle that is out of alignment will wear unevenly from the first week, and that wear cannot be reversed. Checking alignment at the same time protects the tires you just paid for.

Is a wheel alignment the same as tire balancing?

No. Alignment adjusts the angles of the wheels relative to the road and the vehicle. Balancing corrects weight distribution within a wheel and tire assembly. Both can cause vibration, which is why we check the alignment angles rather than guessing from the symptom.

Can you align vehicles that are not Chevrolets?

Yes. Our service department works on most makes and models, and you do not need to have bought the vehicle from us.
